Nine Harper Adams students have been presented with £500 worth of prizes for their work on an assignment sponsored by leading property consultants, Carter Jonas.
The company established the annual awards for second year students on the Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) and Rural Property Management (RPM) courses at the University College, two years ago.
This year, the students were asked to work in groups on a real-life case study of Haston Farmhouse on the Sansaw Estate near Shrewsbury.
The winners were announced today and had their prizes presented by Andrew Black, an associate of the Shrewsbury Carter Jonas branch and Harper alumnus, who also established the award scheme.
Mr Black said: “This year’s assignment included a diverse mix of agricultural, residential and commercial properties on the estate and has been specifically tailored to provide students with real life skills for use during their placement year.
“Carter Jonas is delighted to be involved with the students at Harper Adams.”
The winning group – Matthew Williams, Rob MacKenzie and William Vaughan, received £100 each for their work on the assignment.
21-year-old Matthew Williams from Llanbister, Powys, said: “This has inspired me to succeed on my placement at Morris, Marshall and Poole – an estate agent and valuers in Welshpool.
“The assignment was quite difficult as it combined both academic and professional skills on a range of matters, but I will find the experience useful in the future.”
Coming in second and receiving £50 each was Edward Merriman, Johnathan Hawking and Owen Evans.
Third place of £20 each was awarded to Catherine Burton, Polly Coleman and Sophie Botsford.
REALM Course Manager, Simon Keeble, said: “As always, we thank Carter Jonas for their continued support as this enables students to deal with a live case and bring the practical side of surveying to their studies.
“But, it also recognises their achievements with cash prizes for the top students.”
Placement forms the third year of a sandwich degree at Harper Adams University College. Examples for REALM and RPM include Savills, Fisher German and The National Trust.
