Students meet Welsh Minister
Posted 13 May 2013
Welsh students from Harper Adams University visited the National Assembly in Cardiff to meet the Minister for Natural Resources and Food, Alun Davies, recently.
The students, members of the Harper Cymru society, were joined by Senior Lecturer, Wyn Morgan and Vice-Chancellor, Dr David Llewellyn.
The meeting with the minister gave them the opportunity to ask questions on a range of topics with importance to Welsh farming policy. These included the future of the Glastir scheme, renewable energy production, young entrants to the sector, research and development in the food chain, and the assembly government’s approach to tackling bovine TB.
Commenting on the visit, Dr Llewellyn, said: “It was very good of the Minister to take time out of his busy schedule to meet our group.
“We learned a lot from the meeting and I am sure that our students, some of whom are researching the subjects we discussed, will be better able to put their findings into the context of current policy thinking as a result of this visit.”
The meeting was followed by a tour of the Senedd building, which was opened in 2006 on the regenerated docklands area of Cardiff. It features many aspects of sustainable building development which can also be found on the campus at Harper Adams.
It provided a helpful insight into the way in which the assembly government works and how the wider public in Wales can be involved with setting the policy agenda.
Student, Catherine Bennett, said: “It was a great opportunity to quiz the Minister on a number of issues badly affecting Welsh farmers.
“I feel it was beneficial for us to meet Mr Davies so that we could form our own opinions about current policies.”
