Alumnus keeping students safe as they drive home for Christmas

Harper Adams students are being given a safe send-off as they head home for Christmas this year, thanks to a graduate of the university. 

Richard Allin, who graduated with an honours degree in Agri-food with Marketing and Management, is Sales and Marketing Manager for nationwide tyre-fitting service etyres, which is sending out mobile tyre fitters to a series of universities and colleges this month. 

Richard, who has worked in marketing for arts and charity organisations before moving into the automotive sector, said: “The tyre check came about as I thought back to my time as a student and the lack of checks most of us did during term time. 

“Most of my course mates had 100 miles-plus to drive home and we had little thought about whether our tyres might have gone down in the months since the start of term.

“Having been part of the recent Road Safety Week and checked thousands of tyres, we discovered a number of bald, damaged or punctured tyres which the drivers had no awareness of and we have likely prevented some serious road accidents by spotting these issues. 

“We also found that few motorists knew how to check their tread depths or pressures and we are working to educate drivers how to do this.”

Jo da Silva, Acting Student Services Manager, said: “We were more than happy to welcome etyres to the campus after Richard contacted us. We run a series of events throughout the year to help keep our students safe on the roads, so it has been great to see them taking up etyres’ kind offer. We wish them all a safe journey home for the Christmas holidays and back to Harper Adams in the new year.”
