The new Syngenta scholar at Harper Adams University is Alice Clews, 20, from Wetherby, West Yorkshire.

Alice is a second year BSc (Hons) Agriculture & Crop Management student and will receive a payment of £4,500 this year plus a paid placement year with Syngenta.

She said: “The scholarship involves a 12-month placement year with Syngenta’s trials team, based just outside of Cambridge, commencing September 2016.  It will involve overseeing various crop trials on the site and nearby farms as well as data collection and analysis, which will be beneficial towards my final year Honours Research Project.

“Syngenta is a global agri-business that trials and produces agrochemicals and seeds. The company aims the make better use of available resources and therefore improve global food security. With global population and demand for food continuing to increase, the agricultural production industry, I feel, will be extremely interesting and exciting to be a part of, which therefore drove my interest to apply for the award.

“As a global business offering a competitive award, I feel extremely grateful to have been selected for the Syngenta Scholarship for 2016. Along with the provision of a placement that is required for my degree, the value of the scholarship will allow me to dedicate my summer pre-placement to gaining valuable skills and experiences.

“I plan to base my Honours Research Project (HRP) on the trials that are undertaken by Syngenta during my placement year. This will help to further extend my knowledge and interest in crop protection in preparation to join a Graduate/Trainee Agronomist programme following graduation. I also hope that by working for Syngenta, opportunities to study and analyse trials abroad will become available with the hope to study and work abroad in the future.”
