Danny Smart, 22, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, has been awarded the Twose Prize and is the first recipient of the Institute of Chartered Foresters Award.
The Twose Prize is awarded in memory of Natalie Dustan for the best improvement in achievement during the BSc Countryside Management or the BSc Countryside Environmental Management courses.
The new Institute of Chartered Foresters Award is presented the best student studying Level 5 and Level 6 modules in forestry and woodland.
Jim Waterson, senior lecturer, said: “This award from the UK forestry and arboricultural industries professional body recognises consistent high achievement at Level 5 and Level 6 in the forestry and woodland modules.
“Danny worked very well at both levels to produce imaginative, accurate and effective assignments and tackled examination work to a consistently high standard.”
In relation to be awarded the Twose Prize, Simon Irvin, associate head of department and programme manager, said: “Daniel has worked exceptionally hard over the last four years, including his placement year with Eurofins agro-science services.
“Throughout his studies Daniel has balanced his academic and extracurricular activities extremely well. He has gained a well-deserved first-class honours BSc Countryside and Environmental Management degree.
“His attention to detail and undoubted enthusiasm for the countryside area makes him a worthy recipient of the award.”
The Twose Prize was presented by Dr Geoffrey Davies OBE whilst the Institute of Chartered Foresters Award was presented by David Edwards.
