Placement year position added to prestigious Duchy of Lancaster scholarship offer

    Posted 5 November 2020

The Duchy of Lancaster values its ongoing relationship with Harper Adams University and is now offering an exciting opportunity to link the usual annual scholarship with a new placement position.

A new placement-linked scholarship is opening up for applications from second- year students on Rural Estate and Land Management or Rural Property Management degree programmes at Harper Adams University.

The Duchy of Lancaster has previously offered a monetary scholarship but is now adding a placement year role to the package offered to students..

Following a competitive application and interview process, The Duchy of Lancaster, a private estate owned by Her Majesty The Queen as Duke of Lancaster, will select one worthy student as its scholar. This individual will receive financial support as well as a 12-month position carrying out estate management duties across the Duchy’s rural portfolio.

The Duchy of Lancaster’s rural estates comprise 18,481 hectares of land in England and Wales and include commercial, agricultural and residential properties and woodland, the majority of which are in Lancashire, Yorkshire, Cheshire, Staffordshire and Lincolnshire.

The successful student will work with the Duchy’s in-house team of Rural Surveyors to deliver property management services on behalf of the Duchy of Lancaster.

Carol Hawkey, Head of Rural Investment, said: “The Duchy of Lancaster values its ongoing relationship with Harper Adams University and is now offering an exciting opportunity to link the usual annual scholarship with a new placement position.

“We are looking for a passionate individual to join our young team based at Lancaster Castle where varied experience will be combined with APC support to provide a first-class placement experience, preparing one stand-out student for a future career in the rural land management sector.”

Susan Ragbourne, Land and Property Course Manager at Harper Adams University, said:

“This is a fantastic opportunity for one of our Rural Land and Property students to spend a placement year learning about land management on Her Majesty The Queen’s Duchy of Lancaster Estates. Not only will they be able to learn about the management of wide range of property assets, they will also be working with Harper alumni, who have a very clear understanding of how the Harper placement year works and what students can achieve from it.”

Harper Adams University’s Head of Development, Doris Taylor, said: “We are delighted to be able to offer our students this fantastic scholarship opportunity, coupled with a placement role which will give them invaluable experience in all aspects of estate management.

“The scholarship closes on 18th November, so the successful recipient will have their placement position for 2021 secured before Christmas, in addition to the scholarship award and the financial support generously offered by the Duchy of Lancaster.”

Students at Harper Adams University who are looking for a placement in 2021/22 can find out more about this placement job by logging into the student dashboard and visiting the Duchy of Lancaster Employer Online Stand.
