STUDENTS who are currently applying for Higher Education in 2002, are being invited to attend an Open Day at Shropshire's only University College next month. Harper Adams University College, near Newport, in Shropshire will throw open its doors on Sunday, October 14, 2001, for an event that is primarily aimed at students in Year 13 (Upper 6th Form). Information on the wide choice of courses and opportunities for students at Harper Adams will be available along with help and advice on UCAS applications.Lecturers and staff will be on hand to talk a programme of courses that now includes Business Management and Marketing, Off Road Vehicle Design, Engineering, Countryside and Environment Management, Retail Management and Agriculture.
Prospective students and their parents will also be able to take guided tours of the grounds and facilities and see for themselves why more than 1700 students are currently studying at Harper Adams. Harper Adams' range of business and engineering courses is becoming increasingly popular, especially amongst students living locally and there are now a variety of scholarships and bursaries, many of which are sponsored by industry, available to ease the financial pressures of Higher Education.
Richard Jopling, Head of Liaison said: "Many students now choose to study at their local university and generally speaking, we have noticed that more and more applicants for our range of business studies courses are now coming from the local area."
Part of Harper Adams' attraction is the close contact it maintains with industry. All courses contain a paid one-year industrial placement that allows students to gain practical experience in preparation for their chosen career.
Employers, such as Tesco who have recently set up a Masterclass programme with Harper Adams, like the combination of education and experience that Harper Adams' graduates possess - as proven by the excellent graduate employment statistics achieved by the University College.
Harper Adams has an international reputation for the quality of the courses it provides and for its research work. The Higher Education Quality Assurance Agency awarded teaching at Harper Adams a score of 23, from the maximum 24 points - the highest score gained by an institution in this subject area.
The quality of research has also been assessed, receiving a high 3b rating while the graduate employment record speaks for itself with 88% of undergraduates and 100% of postgraduates finding employment within a few months of leaving - more than 50% more than the national average.
