A GREENLAW STUDENT, who has captained both her local hockey and rugby teams, has won a prestigious Entrance Award to continue her education at Harper Adams University College, Shropshire.
Katherine Lauder, of Greenlaw, Berwickshire, will receive the £750 award in September when she starts a BSc (Hons) Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) degree course at the institution. Miss Lauder is keen to work in the land-based industries and believes the course at Harper Adams will give her an opportunity to widen and improve her knowledge and experience.
Miss Lauder's interests revolve around the countryside and sports. As captain of her school's 2nd XI, she became involved with all aspects of a successful hockey team including coaching and training younger pupils. In rugby, she rose to become captain of the Melrose Under-17 side and when the season ends, heads for the front nine as a member of Torwoodlee Golf Club.
Hailing from a farming background, Miss Lauder has always been involved with the day to day aspects of the land-based industries but recently became involved in the management of rare breeds of livestock, such as Highland Cattle and Golden Pheasants. Work shadowing undertaken with the assistant factor at Bowhill Estate, Selkirk, first pointed Miss Lauder in the direction of land management as a career.
Richard Jopling, Head of Liaison at the University College, said: “The selection panel was very impressed with Katherine's application. She is just the sort of enthusiastic and dedicated person who will do well at Harper Adams. "
Harper Adams University College is the UK’s largest, specialist centre of Higher Education for the land and food based industries.
