HARPER ADAMS ELECTS FERNS MAN

BOBBY BARBOUR from Ferns, Co Wexford has just been elected to the position of President of the Students’ Union by his fellow students at the top rural University College in The UK. This is the first time that this sabbatical position has been held by a Republic of Ireland man.

Bobby who is a former pupil of Wesley College, Dublin, and who also studied at Gurteen College in Co. Tipperary, comes from a farming background in Ferns. He then went on to Harper Adams University College in Shropshire, England to first complete an HND in Agriculture and then to finally top up this qualification to a degree. He will now hold the salaried position of President of The Students’ Union for an academic year before finally launching a career in Agri-Business Management.

“I am delighted and honoured to be elected president of this internationally known and respected University College,” comments Bobby. “Harper Adams is expanding and developing new resources and facilities for students and I am pleased to be able to play my part in helping along that development. There are new courses as well, which include areas of study such as Rural Leisure and Tourism, Retail and Veterinary Practice Management. This means more students from a diverse range of backgrounds and it is the job of The SU to see that they are all welcomed and supported throughout their time here.”

The SU at Harper Adams handles over £425K per annum and has the responsibility to ensure that students are provided with a high standard of facilities, clubs, societies and varied entertainments to get the most out of University College life.
