PEOPLE STILL SINGING AT HARPER ADAMS

PERFORMERS AT Harper Adams University College hope to build upon the success of musical extravaganza ‘Hear the People Sing,’ performed last year, when their latest production hits the stage.

Later this month the Harper Adams Musical Society (HAMS) hopes to wow audiences once again, with a lively take on the hit Rodgers and Hammerstein musical Oklahoma!

Oklahoma! takes place in the early 1900’s in the Indian territory soon to become Oklahoma state and is the story of two love triangles. Charming cowboy Curly (played by Chris Horn) and rough farmhand Jud (Edward Leddy Owen) fight for the affections of homely farm-girl Laurey (Fiona Wilkinson) while flighty Ado Annie (Rachel Billington) can’t decide between happy-go-lucky Will Parker (Ike Evans) and the exotic charms of peddler Ali Hakim (Graham Scott).

Lynn Hunt and Alistair Craib, both of whom are well known locally for their involvement in successful amateur operatic productions including Jesus Christ Superstar, staged at the Oakengates Theatre, Telford, have produced a stunning show that includes rousing musical and dance numbers.

With well-known songs including “Oh what a beautiful morning”, “I can’t say no” and title number “Oklahoma!” this production is sure to make an excellent family night out.

Dr Robert Wilkinson, Chairman of HAMS, said: “With agriculture one of the most popular courses at the college, it is not surprising that we have chosen a show with a decidedly rural theme.”

HAMS was formed in 2001 and is made up of staff and students from all corners of Harper Adams. Dr Wilkinson said: “The depth of theatrical talent hidden within the university has once again been astounding.”

Oklahoma! will be performed in the Queen Mother Hall, at Harper Adams campus, near Newport, Shropshire, with a 7.30pm showing every night from March 19 – 22. Tickets cost just £6 per adult and £5 concessions and are available from The Music Shop, on Newport High Street, Edgmond village shop and the reception desk at Harper Adams.
