FROM 2004 IT WILL be a legal requirement for all producers, who wish to wholesale or retail their eggs themselves, to add a producer code. Harper Adams University College currently uses a grading machine that could not economically be modified to comply with the new regulations. This unfortunately means that Harper Adams will no longer be able to sell its eggs direct to customers through Newport Market.
Harper Adams’ Poultry Manager Dave Chadwick said: “We have only ever sold a small percentage of our eggs direct to customers through Newport Market. The majority are sold on to Deans Foods, a company that supplies the major supermarkets.
“We are now in a position where we cannot continue to sell our eggs at the market, so 100 per cent of Harper Adams eggs will now be sold through Deans Foods.”
