Engineers Win Waitrose Prize

Three engineering students at Harper Adams University College, Shropshire, have been awarded the WAITROSE BUILDING DESIGN PRIZE 2004. Leonard HOVENDEN, of Ballylinan, Co Laois, Ireland, Brian SHEEHAN, of Castlemaine, Co Kerry, Ireland, and David MOULD, of Inkberrow, Worcestershire, were presented with the award after producing the most appropriate project in Building Design, judged by Waitrose.

Each year Waitrose set a real life building design problem on one of their farms on the Leckford Estate in Hampshire. The final year engineering students on the module, Building Design and Environmental Engineering, tackled the problem as their assignment, contributing 30 per cent to the module marks. This year the students were asked to redesign the Longstock Dairy Unit to be the heifer rearing unit for the new 600 cow dairy unit they are currently building at Leckford. (The dairy unit design is based on the winning assignment of three years ago, by Mohabir Raghunath). In March this year 24 students accompanied by their tutor, Jim Loynes, visited the Leckford Estate, where the assignment was set and discussed by Mr Richard Salder, Head of Buying, Waitrose, and Mr Malcolm Crabtree, Leckford Estate Managing Director.

The three students were presented with the award at Harper Adams’ annual graduation ceremony last month, where they also collected their degree certificates.
