Tom, a student at Harper Adams University College, Shropshire, collected the award at the university’s annual graduation ceremony last month. The De-Laval award, held in association with Farmers Guardian, is based on a 1000 word essay written on a topic selected by De-Laval. This year’s topic was ‘Improving Cow Comfort’. Tom’s essay appeared as an article in the Farmers Guardian.
Tom, who is currently enjoying a year’s work placement with Andersons, is a second year student on the BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Animal Science course at Harper Adams. As part of his prize he will be traveling to Argentina to investigate low cost dairy systems. Tom has kept a diary of his experiences which will be published in the Farmers Guardian. The student comes from a farming background; his family farm has 120 dairy cows and some arable land in South Wiltshire.
