Simple salts as disease control

Can the same salt used in baking powder be used as a pesticide to combat common plant diseases such as mildew?
Researchers at Harper Adams University College, in conjunction with ADAS and DEFRA, are hoping to find out which are the best salts and how to effectively use them.
