Shrewsbury based dog food business goes to Crufts

    11 March 2019

The fresh dog food business Different Dog, which launched in December 2017, was at Crufts this year from 7th to 10th March showcasing their healthy nutritious balanced meals for dogs as well as their new plastic-free packaging. The pop-up kitchen hosted a live cooking demonstration showing the public the ingredients and methods of cooking used in creating their fresh dog food where human-grade food is used in all of the meals.

The team is made up of a number of Harper Adams graduates as well as placement students, Anna Lockley, a Food Technology and Nutrition student, and Pheobe Heslop, a Food Technology and Product Development student. Also in the team is an in-house vet and pet nutritionist.

Different Dog was set up by husband and wife team Charlie and Alex Thurstan. Charlie had worked in the pet food industry for four years and had seen the processes pet food goes through which made him decide he wanted to poduce a healthy balanced fresh food for dogs.

The business is located at the Shropshire Food Enterprise Centre in Shrewsbury and takes on Harper Adams Food or Animal students each year to complete their placement.

Kate Westall, a Food Nutrition and Well-Being student, was the first employee of the business on her placement when it started up. Kate helped shape and expand the company over the thirteen months she was there.
