Today is Young Carers Awareness Day, a national event organised by Carers Trust, to support young people that help to look after someone on a day-to-day basis.
The Carers Trust identified that caring for someone can be "very isolating, worrying, and stressful" which can have a negative impact on life experiences, including sustaining friendships, remaining in education, and enjoying life to its fullest. School aged children may then never get to experience higher education as an option, feeling responsibility to stay with the person they care for and potential miss out on life changing experiences.
Harper Adams joined the Care Leaver Covenant in November 2019, committing to ensure that the care leaving community are made a priority of the institution, supporting them on a number of levels, including fulfilling their educational needs and helping them on the path to future employment. We are standing with young carers by offering resources, places to talk, and campaigning across social media so they will receive the recognition they deserve.
Care Leaver Covenant Senior Engagement Advisor, Kirsty McQueen said: “We are pleased to recognise Harper Adams as a signatory of the Care Leaver Covenant. The commitment they have made will ensure that the care leaving community are a priority of the whole institution, creating opportunity and support on a number of levels.
“Harper Adams have been dedicated in compiling an offer which gives a clear priority to the care experienced community and the Care Leaver Covenant is confident that this will only be enhanced and developed as time moves on.”
