Young designers needed for Christmas cake

Harper Adams University College is encouraging Shropshire primary school children to be creative and design a Christmas cake ready for the festive Farmers Market in December.

The deadline for entries is November 5 and designs need to be for a 10” round cake using an A4 sheet of paper. The winner’s design will then be recreated onto the cake ready for presentation on the day.

Known primarily for its quality teaching and plough to plate ethos, the Shropshire-based campus will be welcoming residents from Edgmond and the surrounding parishes to the Farmers Market on December 5, 10am until 2pm.

With both indoor and outdoor exhibitor space, the event is not weather dependent and is certain to bring some festive cheer to the campus.

Co-ordinator for the event, Sue Henderson, said: “This is a follow up after the success of our first Farmers Market in September, where around 1000 visitors bought goods from 30 stallholders.

“It was a fantastic day with many of our producers selling out within two hours so we thought it would be great idea to do the same for Christmas.”

Refreshments, including mulled wine and mince pies, will be available, as well as entertainment from local school choirs and bands. Father Christmas is expected to make a guest appearance and tractor-trailer rides will be helping to raise money for the ‘Farms for City Children’ charity.

With the emphasis on a festive theme, stallholders will be selling food and craft products suitable for gifts, and shoppers can then have these wrapped at the gift wrapping stall.

A selection of the Christmas cake designs will be on display in the Bamford library foyer during the Farmers Market, as well as the winning cake which will be presented on the day. A surprise gift will be given to the young designer.
