Bee convention attracts more than 2000 visitors

More than 2000 bee enthusiasts headed to Harper Adams University College at the weekend for the annual British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) Spring Convention.

It is the first time that the event has been held at Harper Adams in Shropshire since outgrowing their usual home at the National Beekeeping Centre in Warwickshire.

At a time when the world’s honey bees are in crisis, the role of the beekeeper is increasingly important to ensure the health of this important pollinator. The three-day event was designed to increase knowledge and understanding of this fascinating craft as well as giving attendees an opportunity to stock up on equipment from specialist suppliers.

The convention featured 27 lectures, 30 workshops and the soil hall on campus was converted to host a bustling trade fair. Subjects covered included microscopy, botany for beekeepers, hive making, swarm control, honey beer brewing and cup-cake making.

The BBKA, an educational charity set up in 1874, is the UK's leading organisation representing beekeepers.
It promotes:
* the importance of bees in the environment; 
* support for beekeepers through education necessary to maintain healthy colonies of honey bees; 
* awareness of the craft of beekeeping.
