A student from a Shropshire school has chosen Harper Adams to help her to apply for a chemistry award that will assist with her application to university.

Rachel Bentham, who is currently enrolled at Newport Girls' High School, is working on a research project as part of her application for the British Science Association's CREST Award scheme.

She hopes that completing the Gold level award will help to enhance her personal statement when she applies to study at university.

The CREST Award schemes are a range of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) enrichment activities aimed at inspiring 5-19 year-olds. The top award is Gold level and allows able students aged 16-19 to conduct real research projects.

For her project, Rachel has been comparing the analysis of soil samples using a traditional laboratory bench method and an automated method.

She has been assisted by the university's laboratory staff and technicians.
