Copyright protects by law the rights of the creator of an original work. If you break copyright rules by photocopying more than you are allowed from a book or journal you are breaking the law.

Copyright covers printed and electronic material including websites, illustrations, films, recorded music, computer software and all intellectual property.

You are permitted to copy a small amount of a work for your own private study or non-commercial research if you acknowledge the source it comes from.

The generally accepted maximum you may copy from printed material is:

• one article from an issue of a journal
• up to one chapter or 10%, whichever is greater, of a book

You may print or save single copies of articles from electronic journals.

You may not:

• Copy a whole book or journal.
• Use any copies you have made for commercial purposes i.e to make money.
