Meet the teams: How food can make for a happy and healthy life with Dr Helen Pittson

    12 June 2020

Continuing our series of “meet the team” blogs, in this entry, we meet another member of the Food Technology and Innovation Department; Senior Tutor and Senior Lecturer in Food Science Dr Helen Pittson.

Helen specialises in human nutrition, public health, wellbeing and healthy lifestyles for older people, and sports nutrition.

She has over 10 years of experience of working in public health, both in the NHS and local authority. She’s worked on many public health interventions including: adult weight management; sport and exercise; walking for health; healthy lifestyles for families; community food projects; workplace health; childhood obesity; weight management during pregnancy; and wellbeing and healthy lifestyles for older people.

At Harper Adams, Helen is the module leader for: Academic and Professional Skills for the Food Industry; Communications and Professional Skills for the Food Industry; Wellbeing Through the Lifecycle; and Public Health Nutrition.

She said: “Linking food, nutrition and wellbeing is vital to ensure populations are able to live happy and healthy lives.

“Working with students to explore these evolving areas is exciting and leads to new innovative food products and ways of communicating with the public about the benefits of different foods and how the body uses them.”

Our Food Technology and Innovation Department has staff with expertise in every step of the food chain, from farm gate to plate.  If any of the above topics intrigue you, explore our undergraduate or postgraduate degree opportunities.
