Harper Adams University College was pleased to host a day dedicated to showing farmers and home owners how to implement small scale hydro power.

The conference was organised by Encraft Limited and is part of a series of renewable energy workshops.

Gaynor Orton, Business Development Manager, Sustainable Technologies said: “We frequently host these workshops and this one about small scale hydro power is presently subsidised.

"It's just one of the many steps we are taking to highlight the importance of sustainability not only at the University College, but in the wider community."

Matthew Rhodes, Managing Director of Encraft said: “Hydro power is a technology that has been around for thousands of years and is rising in popularity due to it becoming more affordable.

"You need access to a river or water source across your land, so this workshop appeals mostly to farmers, mill owners and sometimes water companies."

Hydro power uses water to rotate different kinds of mechanisms, which in-turn generate electricity.

Matthew added: "It can be very sympathetic to the local environment, and so can be an opportunity to actually improve the habitat for local creatures, but there is a regulatory process to go through.

"We have a lot of interest in the workshop at Harper Adams and this is the fifth one we have organised this year alone. It's been one of the most popular courses and we've had great fun doing it."
