CLA Charitable Trust doubles scholarship award

The CLA Charitable Trust has launched a second scholarship at Harper Adams University – adding to their well-established annual undergraduate scholarship they have been awarding for several years.

Both of the competitive scholarships are awarded to second year students at Harper Adams studying Rural Enterprise and Land Management (REALM) or Rural Property Management (RPM).

This year, the scholarships are being awarded to Frances Houseman, 20, from Harrogate, North Yorkshire and James Jay, 20, from Worcester, Worcestershire.

On receiving the award, Frances said: “To have been awarded a scholarship by an organisation as prestigious as the CLA is an honour. It’s a privilege to have been recognised for my hard work.

“I’m extremely grateful and I’d like to take the opportunity to thank both the Trust for their generosity and also Harper Adams for their continued support.”

“This scholarship will support my continued professional development for the remainder of my degree at Harper Adams and beyond.”

James added: “The scholarship is a great achievement that I’m very proud of. The award will certainly help me to achieve my goals at university as well as supporting my ambitions within the profession and with my future career.

“My personal target is to support sustainable land management because I’m aware that land is a very important national asset. Not only is there no more land being created, the land we do have needs retaining and looking after. My career will be based around maintaining our land for our own benefit and for the benefit of future generations.

“I’d like to thank the Trustees for awarding me with the scholarship. I’m very grateful for the generosity that has been shown by the CLA Charitable Trust. It’s a true honour and privilege.”

Sir Henry Aubrey Fletcher, the chairman of the CLA Charitable Trust, said: “The CLA Charitable Trust values greatly its scholarship project with Harper Adams. As landowners, farmers and rural business men and women we need the knowledge and experience of well trained professionals to advise us in our businesses.

“We have been fortunate to be offered excellent students to support, who take considerable interest in what the CLA is doing and learn to understand the challenges of rural business management from practitioners which in turn helps inform their academic studies. We follow the careers of past scholars with interest.”

“The Trustees are gratified by the high standard of competition for their support and for the interest taken in the work of CLA. For their part the Trustees, with increased support from the membership, have been able to provide this additional award. They follow the progress of their current and past scholars with keen interest,” added Mr Neil Mainwaring, Trustee.
