Matthew from non-farming background awarded Kelly Bronze scholarship including graduate position

Harper Adams University BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Animal Science student, Matthew Rollason, has received a British Poultry Council Scholarship, in association with Kelly Bronze. The student, who comes from a non-farming background, looks forward to being a part of the Derek Kelly Beef programme thanks to being awarded the scholarship that includes the graduate position.

The 22 year-old, from Bury, Lancashire said: “As I’ve grown, so has my passion for livestock, even though I’ve come from a non-farming background.

“From an early age, I’ve been milking cows as well as getting heavily involved with pedigree beef cattle and exhibiting them at shows, so a career in agriculture was inevitable.

“Over the years, I’ve broadened my experience in different sectors, including beef, dairy and sheep. This lead to two years of studying agriculture at Myerscough College, and it was a natural progression to study agriculture further at Harper.

“I remember looking around different universities, but when I came to Harper, I knew it was for me. It’s been really useful to specialise in animal science and was important in gaining placement and now my graduate job.

“My placement was with Cogent Breeding Ltd, a leading global bovine genetics company. Working for Cogent lead to a number of amazing opportunities. Even after I’d finished, I went to work at a renowned Hereford stud in Australia and when I had the chance to import genetics back to the UK, I worked with the Cogent team to secure a substantial deal on an exciting new sire.

“I also had the chance to work in the Cogent bull stud, which was a unique opportunity that so few people get the chance to do. This allowed me to experience the whole production cycle; taking samples, working in the labs and also photographing and marketing the bulls as well.

“After many years working with pedigree Hereford cattle and a placement year at Cogent Breeding, I look forward to getting involved with the exciting breeding programme at Derek Kelly Beef.

“At its heart, this will utilise the best of Aberdeen Angus and Wagyu genetics and aim to provide the consumer with a truly exceptional product and unforgettable eating experience.”

On receiving the scholarship, Matthew added: “The scholarship will be hugely beneficial in terms of helping to fund my final year studies.

“I’m extremely grateful to both the BPC and Kelly Bronze for granting me this scholarship and providing me with such a sought after opportunity.”
