Passion for farming secures scholar Cumbrian Agricultural Student of the Year award

A passion for faming has seen an Agribusiness Management scholar at Harper Adams University named Cumbria’s Agricultural Student of the Year.

Megan Powell, who is just about to begin her fourth and final year at the University, received her prize at a glittering ceremony at Carlisle Racecourse for the sixth annual Cumbria Farmer Awards.

She said: “It was such a lovely surprise and a proud moment. I was incredibly grateful to receive the award, especially knowing how much work goes into the course and the experiences I’ve had at Harper Adams. It was a special recognition of something I’m passionate about.

“The awards evening was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the achievements of people across the agricultural industry. It was great to be surrounded by so many people and to have the chance to celebrate everyone’s hard work and achievements.

“It was an enjoyable and memorable evening - and made receiving the award even more special!”

Originally from Grasmere, Megan – who has just completed a placement at David Allen, Dalston, decided to study at Harper Adams because of the University’s ‘practical approach’ to learning and focus on graduate prospects.

She said: “I chose my course because I’ve always wanted to have a career within the agricultural industry, particularly one where I can support and work alongside farmers.

“I wanted to develop a strong understanding of the industry and gain the practical knowledge and experience needed to help farmers in the future.

“Harper Adams really stood out to me because of its practical approach to learning and its strong connections with the agricultural industry.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time at Harper Adams so far. That practical experience, and the opportunities available, have allowed me to develop both academically and personally, while learning from lecturers and people working within the agricultural industry.

“I’ve also really enjoyed the social side of university, meeting new people while being around familiar faces from home and the wider agricultural community.

“Having that mix of new experiences and familiar connections has made my time at Harper Adams enjoyable and memorable.”
