Getting Ready for the Next Adventure

STUDENTS considering higher education for a career in the rural, food, or land-based industries are invited to a taster event at Shropshire’s Harper Adams University College.

Questions going through the minds of 16 to 18-year-olds about the next step could be answered at a two-day Higher Education Choices conference.

Professional help is at hand at the conference, in July, and students considering university study can experience university life for themselves.

Advisers from universities, colleges and businesses across the UK will come together to hand out advice on a diverse range of courses and careers including agriculture, business, conservation, countryside and environment, engineering, equine, food, land management, leisure management, marketing, retail, veterinary nursing and science and many more.

During the event, students can also attend lectures, seminar and student-based activities to pick up information and advice on courses and careers in their subject area.

Sally Bishop, co-ordinator of the event, said: “This is a fantastic way for teenagers to experience university life at Harper Adams. It has been successful in previous years and we are aiming to make 2006 the best year yet. I urge anyone who is considering coming to Harper Adams, or another university, to study to come along to the conference – you will not be disappointed.”

Overnight accommodation is provided in Harper Adams’ own halls of residence to give you a real taste of what university life will be like.  A programme of games and competitions will be hosted in the Students’ Union, followed by the opportunity to party the night away.
And students from Devon and Cornwall will be able to hop on a free bus on July 9th to bring them to the event.

Among those supporting the event will be the universities of Liverpool and Reading, the Bishop Burton College, Warwickshire College, Reaseheath, Writtle and Myerscough Colleges.

Businesses including JCB, BASC, Agriventure, Landscape Institute, NFYFC, Lantra (the National Training Organisation for the land-based industries) and the Independent Schools Careers Organisation (ISCO) will also be involved.

The conference fee, which includes all meals, accommodation, entertainment and a conference pack stuffed full of freebies is just £25.  Apply with a friend and it’s just £35 in total.
