JSR Farms is one of the UK’s largest family-owned farming businesses and is based on the edge of the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds in East Yorkshire. Accommodation will be provided. They farm over 4000 hectares using the latest hi-tech equipment and commercial pig production methods.
Two placement linked scholarships are available – one pig and one arable. Both have an attractive salary of £16000 with scholarship funds of £4,500 paid in the student’s 2nd year and the potential for a further £4,500 in the final year, subject to review after placement.
The positions offer a range of practical and office-based agricultural experience.
The successful candidate(s) may spend time in the following areas of the business, (dependent on your preferences):
Coordination of grain intake at the central storage facility, including quality control of grain (eg recording moisture levels) and the operation of the Black Cat weighbridge software.
You’ll spend time in the farrowing houses, then in the dry sow section and some time with weaners. This will include AI insemination of the sows, and with weaners you will be looking at the different requirements for the size of pig/feed rations.
Great Givendale is home to the JSR herd of Stabiliser cattle. Calving is a busy time on this farm and a lot of prep work is involved. Whist the majority of cows calve un-aided there may be occasions where a human hand is required!
Genetics – working within the Research, Genetic and Food Quality centre teams, you will get an insight into the scientific, technical and research workings of the company.

There are two studs as well as a new AI stud development in the Borders of Scotland. You will spend time at one of the Company’s existing AI studs where you will experience first-hand on-farm collection and processing of semen to fulfil our Customers orders. On peak days this operation is fast moving and requires the team to work together like a well-oiled machine in order to meet the tight time constraints they have in order to deliver the AI on time.
This team is ultimately responsible for having the correct numbers of animals in the system to fulfil sales orders. As part of your ‘Walking the Chain’ you will join the Selectors and gain a good understanding of the challenges they face and how the right animals are delivered to the right customers.
