UNIVERSITIES WEEK 2011 FRIDAY - INSIDE BIG IDEAS

The Harper Adams University College 4x4 Club is hoping to encourage students from across all courses to join them in off road trips across the country.

Usually, the club attracts students from engineering courses, but Secretary, Chris Southall, hopes that other students will begin to take an interest. He said: “You don’t need your own vehicle to be a member of the 4x4 Club, you’re welcome to tag along as a passenger.

“We would love more people to be involved, membership isn’t much, it just pays for the running of the club.”

Trips involve visits to ‘pay and play’ sites across the country, where students test their vehicles out against each other, to see which performs the best.

Treasurer, Dan Stiratt, said: “Our days out are usually local, to places like Buildwas and Silverdale but we do travel further afield and have been to Bala in North Wales. At the moment we are organising a trip to Sheffield.

“It’s all about testing the vehicles and the driver’s capabilities. Between us we have a selection of vintage and modern 4x4s, so we can see how the two compare.

“When it all goes wrong, which it often does, there is always someone to help you when you get stuck.”
