Farmers from across the UK learnt about the latest technological advancements in the dairy industry, at Harper Adams University College, recently.

The Dairy Technology Event, now in its third year, boasted a range of top industry experts, forming a comprehensive seminar programme. Examples of topics covered were Catchment Sensitive Farming and updates on the latest research.

The exhibition area featured around 30 leading suppliers, ranging from housing and milking equipment through to animal health, breeding and genetics specialists as well as leading farm machinery makers.

Amongst the seminar speakers was Rhys Williams, Co-owner of Padog Farms Ltd and Nuffield Scholar. He said: “I think there will be huge opportunities within the dairy industry over the next 10 to 20 years, especially for young people coming into dairy farming.

“It’s a good industry to come into and to make best use of that we need highly educated individuals to come in and take up those opportunities.”

Also speaking at the event was Robert Newbery, Chief Dairy Advisor to the NFU. He said: “What I can see about the longer term trends in food and farming, specifically dairy, are positive. There’s going to be demand for more food.

“Whether as young farmers and new farmers they are part of an export industry, or an industry that is displacing more of the imports, the fact is, we believe, there is a growing market for dairy products.”

The event was based around the University College’s dairy £2.3 million unit, which includes a 40-point rotary parlour and forms the base for several PhD research projects.
